Forever
© Brian Nelson

She said this won’t be easy, as she smoked her last cigarette
There’s no time to look back now, no time for regret
She looks at her children, sees the fear in their eyes
They’re on to another town, another trailer paradise

No one wants to see her, when she’s begging for loose change
But she’s has two kids to feed and their daddy won’t speak their names
This isn’t what she asked for, this isn’t what she deserved
He promised her forever, then he walked right out the door

She’s got some cash in her pocket, enough for food and rent
Landlord waived the deposit, a favor she won’t forget
Momma’s bringing groceries, a couch and three beds
This time she thinks she’s found a home, a place to rest their heads

It gets hard to look in the mirror, but she does it anyway
She’s not afraid of hard work, she won’t be the one to blame
This isn’t what she asked for, these cards she was served
He promised her forever, then he walked right out the door

Each day will get better, she tells herself each night
The bills are getting smaller, her kids are wrapped up tight

She sees herself in the mirror, new wrinkles on her face
Scars from paying her dues, time just can’t erase
This isn’t what she asked for, this sentence she has served
He promised her forever, she doesn’t need him anymore
